Migration Service To Begin Issuing Biometric Passports After Completion Of All Required Procedures
The State Migration Service of Ukraine will issue biometric passports after all the required procedures are competed, the press-service said in the press-release.
The first step towards producing the biometric passports is the development and adoption of a number of by-laws on technical descriptions of the documents and the procedure for their draw-up and issue.
Following the adoption of the said regulations the Migration Service will be entitled to invite a tender and choose an enterprise to print the document forms.
Besides the legal regulation, the Migration Service will take measures to establish the relevant infrastructure and provide all territorial divisions (about 679 in Ukraine) with the equipment for drawing up and issuing of biometric passports.
At the same time, the provisions on the passport of the citizen of Ukraine and the foreign passport of the citizen of Ukraine adopted by Verkhovna Rada on June 26, 1992 remain in force.
Thus, the Migration Service will issue documents of 2007 sample to finish the preparations for the biometric documents.
The important thing is that the Law on the Unified State Register of Demographics and Documents Confirming the Citizenship of Ukraine, Proving His Identity or Special Status does not envisage the term for exchanging the previously issued documents into the documents of the new sample.
That is, all Ukrainian passports issued in accordance with the Verkhovna Rada's decision of June 26, 1992 will be valid indefinitely and their exchange for biometric passports is a right, not an obligation, of citizens of Ukraine.
The similar situation is with the foreign passports which will remain valid until the date specified in them as the final date of their validity.
The citizens of Ukraine may produce such passports when traveling abroad, applying for a visa, etc.
As Ukrainian News earlir reported, the Law on the Unified State Register of Demographics and Documents Confirming the Citizenship of Ukraine, Proving His Identity or Special Status, that provides for introduction of biometric passports, came into force on December 6.
