MasterCard, WFP to Deliver «Digital Food»
The world’s largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger, the World Food Programme (WFP) has announced a three-year global partnership with MasterCard to use digital innovation to help people around the globe.
The United Nations Digital Food initiative will combine MasterCard’s expertise in electronic payments systems with WFP’s global reach among the world’s hungriest populations to obtain the nutritional needs of the most vulnerable.
Instead of physically importing and donating food in the areas, the WFP will use mobile phones, smart cards, electronic vouchers and even text messages to give cash to people without regular access to banks or financial services.
WFP, which operates in 38 countries, currently distributes $208 million in cash and vouchers each year, that are redeemable in local shops for food and other staple items, but now people will be able to buy food in local markets.
